Daily Draw February and 30 Day Monster Girl Challenge

I'm doing Daily Draw and a 30 day challenge over on my tumblr. I'll be posting recaps here at the end of each week but if you'd like to follow along as I go click the "daily draw" button at the top of my blog spot.

For now, here's the start, a raven harpy.

Postcards

Liz from my webcomic for promotional postcards I'll be sending out over the next few weeks in hopes of getting some freelance illustration gigs.

One of my biggest pet peeves in any narrative including robots/androids/AIs is the whole SYNTHETIC LIFE WANTS ONLY TO DESTROY ORGANIC LIFE that is pretty much the biggest mainstay of the genre. Liz, as a result is pretty fond of plants and a large portion of her character arc is trying to connect to organic life and further her own consciousness via her continued interaction with others.

Medieval drawing night

The theme for this week's drawing night was "Medieval" so I drew a more modern take on one of my favourite garments, the chaperon (a headdress with long swaths of fabric circling the neck or hanging from the headdress in a elaborate style).

Sorry about the lack of posting over here. I've been working on hats and my final pages for my comics class; the first two hats are on tumblr. I won't be posting them here until after Christmas as they're for my parents and they actually check this blog somewhat regularly. I'm also a bit hesitant to post here because I've been getting a lot of hits from spam/virus sites every time I post that are wrecking my stats.

Even more ink

Bunch of ink drawings from last night's drawing session. The little fattie in the middle is now my icon for both this blog and my tumblr blog.

More ink

Weeping because I like the B/W version more and I'm going to have to spend a lot of time cleaning it up so I can print a copy.

More fancy punks

My drawing method is now officially 1. try to draw something, 2. have it turn into a bunch of sour-faced punks. I'm not typing out what it says behind them here because this is my "attempt at being professional blog".
The guys's hands are easily the best hands I've ever drawn; that is, however, outweighed by the fact that his boots are the worst boots I've ever designed.

More Colour Tests

Lady counterpart to yesterday's boy. I don't even know what I'm doing anymore as I've stared at my computer screen for the length of 2.5 soundtracks and I'm going to go do something else now. Like make dinner.

Quorra

Quorra from Tron Legac, 2-2.5 hours
Had difficulty with her smile and a little bit with the colours but I really liked drawing her eyes. They're so expressive.

Rachael

Spent about 2 hours last night making a first attempt at a colour portrait (only ever done black and white); big learning curve but a great experience. I used a movie frame of Rachael from Blade Runner as reference. Likeness, good; colours, not so much.

Mushroom Lady

Coloured the ink drawing I did last week in photoshop. Thinking that she's in need of becoming a sticker for my laptop some time soon. Also like the first thing I've ever drawn that I think would make a good print.

Ink

Started doing inks by hand again. I found this really fun so now all I want to do is draw things with a brush pen.

Hybrids

Mermaid painted in a few hours this afternoon/evening. Feels good to be able to paint again. Been too tired and unable to focus to do anything more than cell-shading for so long.

Pair of sketches, including the mermaid sketch, from last night. I'd like to do a pair of illustrations with the satyr girl and another satyr I drew in December. Got to finish other projects first.

Something old and something new

Returned to an old character from last year that I kind of forgot about. Been feeling that my style's been getting stagnant lately so I played around with colour and shapes on a sketch from last night for a bit. Liking it. More vibrant and eye catching. Now to just get over my fear of drawing clothes accurately in motion and perspective in digital.

Haydee

Haydee - The Count of Monte Cristo ch.49
The Count of Monte Cristo is one of my favourite novels and though Pere Dumas’ writing is so detailed Haydee was the only one who always stood out with an obvious look to her. I think this is in part due to her very contradictory personas. In public she acts the part of a childish, dumb coquette but in private she shares her pain and desires with the Count; that kind of great characterization always stands out to me. I wanted to create something representitive of her outwards persona, the beautiful coquette, and her inner turmoil while following her description from the beginning of Ch.49
I have very mixed feelings about this one. I saw the best art student owl the other day that I think explains my feelings pretty well: you know it's done when you hate it. If you don't hate it yet it's not done. There's a lot I like and a lot I feel like I failed at - mostly the composition and reclining figure.

Year's end

Little early but might as well post now! First something new to set the year off right,
An Art Nouveau (specifically Mucha) inspired illustration that I'll be submitting to Threadless for consideration. I'll post again once I submit and would appreciate any votes my few followers might be willing to provide (nudgenudgewinkwink).

Aaannnddd a compilation of my favourites from the year:

Ninja mage

More from the design challenges, 'mage' was this one's theme. Stayed away from the typical robes and went with dolman sleeves and drop-crotch pants. I intended for this to be pure silhouette but it ended up a lot more detailed; also intended for a more complex layering of clothing but the pose made that a bit difficult.

Yzma

Another design challenge, redesign a famous movie or tv character. I chose Yzma from Disney's The Emperor's New Groove. In her original incarnation she looks far more like a flapper than an Incan witch/advisor. She had next to no common design elements with her fellow cast members and pretty much stuck out like a sore thumb despite being awesome.
Kept the colours and headdress (too iconic) and made her overall look fit in more with everyone else. Transitioned her gaudiness into more gold and accessories - it always seemed weird that someone so power hungry wouldn't be decked in gold. For the record, those spindly hands will haunt me for quite some time. The rest of the style wasn't too hard to emulate, but the hands!
